The Characters of ALLASTRIA
As a story, ALLASTRIA the novel has its share of memorable characters, with their backgrounds, motivations, heritage, nature and demeanor. While they have their places in driving the story forward and becoming the heart, soul and spirit of the book, especially with their arcs, conversations, actions, reactions and various capabilities, they are also part of the larger world that is Mortalissar - which is populated by characters and creatures beyond the book and its stories. This means that over time, I may add new characters, creatures, races, monsters, etc. from different parts of the world. Some of them may emerge as character concepts or art sketches from the short fiction narratives which I will try to publish here, or from my constant expansion of the diversities of flora and fauna within the fantasy world itself. Meanwhile, I hope the introduction of the characters from Allastria below intrigues you.
My sincerest thanks to Michelle Ang who did the following character designs for Allastria.
Here lies the heart and soul of the story, where heroes and heroines are born, not out of purpose or plan, but out of circumstance and loss. And when there spin the evil and envy within each one of us, it is not the flurry of blades or blazing storm-fires come forth from our flesh and minds that will vanquish all, but the undying strength and vigor from the desirous good within us all, that will emerge ever pleasant and eternally victorious, once and forever, in our age and beyond.
- Verathgar the First Mage, Mer 1230
Character Name: Taliesar Raska-Rue
Age: 22 Father: Kaleon Raska-Rue Mother: Elandra Sylissa Country of Birth: Allastria Region of Birth: Oeren Lowlands Deity: Goddess Astrial (non-practising) Color of Eyes: Blue Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Blonde/Yellow & Fair Qualities: Swordmastery; Hunting; Horse-riding; Bow and Arrow; Focused Goal Flaws: Impetuous; Quick to Anger/Frustration; Lacks Wit or Debating Skills in Court Taliesar (pronounced as Te(r)-lee-sar) was notable for being competitively proficient with a bladed weapon, be it a sword, scimitar, knife and so on. She knew how to use a shield in combat, fire a bow and arrow, and ride a horse. When she was two years old, her mother committed suicide from the King's Tower in Caldenath City. Having witnessed her mother leap to her death, Taliesar blocked out all memories of that incident and yet, still saw them in her nightmares. Her father, Kaleon, aggrieved by his wife's death himself, then relinquished his role as Lord Commander of the King's Guard and retired to the quiet town of Rulmark. There, he trained her to become the swordswoman that she was. Throughout the years, Kaleon and Taliesar had a strong relationship, going hunting and fishing together in the nearby meadows and hills. Together with the household servants of Rulmark, namely Mother Marth, Farmer Barl, his wife Fern, their five children, Jonsil the chamberlain and Kolonius the retired general, Taliesar had grown to love and cherish her secluded life in Rulmark, learning important lessons in honor, honesty and loyalty, far removed from the politics of city life. |
Character Name: Skarne Gaeru-Nishral / Skaren Nishral (Primoerial)
Age: 20 Father: Olbren Gaeru-Nishral, leader of the Nishral tribe Mother: Unknown Country of Birth: Primoeria (known as a Primoerial-Wolf) Region of Birth: Praemos Deity: Primus the Beast God Color of Eyes: Orange with brown pupils Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Dark brown with patches of lighter brown Qualities: Ability to Summon Magic (jaws and arms must be free for best effect); Speaks the Oeren Tongue common in Allastria, Dreuden, Dassentry, etc. (ie. Skarne (pronounced as Skar-n with a silent 'e'. In the Primoerial tongue, his name is pronounced as Ska-ren) realized his aptitude for magic at a very young age (about 5 years old). As was the practice of his Gaeru heritage, his father sent him into the cold, snowy hills outside his den to forage for food, when he was buffeted by a blizzard that nearly killed him. On the brink of death, he heard a calm voice in his head speaking to him in the Primoerial tongue, teaching him the ways of magic. He managed to mouth the words to keep himself warm just as he was covered in snow. The voice remained in his head for years, not having a gender and age, but speaking only in Primoerial and teaching him the ways of magic. As magic among the Primoerials was still rare, his ability was found out by accident when he was twelve, and he was thrown out of his tribe, the Nishrals. However, a chance encounter with the Tigerlord Kirath saw everything changed. The Primoerials were united under one singular banner and magic became a driving force for their war effort. |
Character Name: Kaleon Raska-Rue
Age: 48 Father: Etrulla Raska (foster father) Mother: Madith Rue (foster mother) Country of Birth: Ramyssan Region of Birth: Aramyss Deity: Goddess Aryssanthia (early life) / Goddess Astrial (later life) Color of Eyes: Blue Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Grey/white & Tanned Qualities: Swordmastery; Hunting; Horse-riding; Bow and Arrow; Leadership; Scouting & Reconaissance Flaws: Silent Loner type; Reveals Little about His Past; Weighed with Grief over Elandra's Death; Harbors Ill-Will towards Enemies of his Country Kaleon (pronounced as Kei-lee-on) was one of Taelon's best friends in their youths. With Zeldrik and Elandra, the four of them grew up in the court of Taelon's father, King Hemelyn Siegeknife, before his death at the hands of the Primoerials in Tae 4299. Not much was known about Kaleon's past except that he was born and raised in the Principality of Ramyssan and later adopted by Hemelyn. As a capable young advisor to Hemelyn, Kaleon was gifted with a great sword - an heirloom that had the inscriptions 'For Allastria, Our Allastria, My Allastria', which was later handed down to Taliesar, his daughter, whom he had with Elandra. He rose in rank within the Allastrian army and became a respected general when Taelon assumed the crown, becoming Lord Commander in Tae 4302. After Elandra's suicide in Tae 4309, a grieving Kaleon relinquished his command and whisked his daughter and his household to the border-town of Rulmark, training her to become an exemplary swordswoman just as he was. He became Lord Captain of Rulmark, tasked with protecting Allastria's southern borders from Primoerial skirmishes and sightings, and occasionally entering the Primoerial borders to spy on the enemy. It wasn't surprising that he would sometimes spend days or even weeks being away from Taliesar during these reconnaissance duties. |

After Hemelyn's death, Zeldrik stood alongside Taelon, Kaleon and Elandra to push the Primoerials back across their border. He soon became the Archmage of Allastria's Council of Wizards, and brought several apprentices under his wing. Unfortunately, none were ready to succeed him should he perish. After Elandra's death, Zeldrik maintained close relations with Kaleon and visited Taliesar often in Rulmark. |

Upon assuming the throne, he had to quickly rally his allies, including friends like Kaleon, Zeldrik and Elandra, to push the Primoerials back across their border. He succeeded, and with the rumored ability that he can divine his future (a gift bestowed on all Allastrian firstborns upon their king-fathers' deaths), he managed to grow the army into a powerful force and occupy much of Primoeria as well. The tides changed when Taelon secured alliances from Allastria's far mightier neighbors - Dreuden and Thalladorn - turning Allastria's misfortunes and suffering into a golden era of wealth, strength and status in Mortalissar. |

He competed in the trials of the jungle (a Primoerial coming-of-age competition) and gained repute when he won several battles against other Primoerial tribes and clans back home. Despite uniting the Primoerials and being sworn as the Tigerlord and unofficial ruler of Primoeria, he saw the plunder and suffering caused by Taelon's occupation of Primoeria. Assembling an army comprising of Skarne and his general Hungaran, he began to mount a guerilla war against Allastria and her neighbors to force them to leave his homeland. |

Having survived many tribal adventures with Skarne and Kirath in their earlier days in Primoeria, Hungaran had the respect of most of the tribes and clans. He was responsible for recruiting most of the army for Kirath in his campaign. |
Character Name: Elandra Sylissa
Age: 26 (death by suicide, Tae 4309) Father: Lord Rullen von Sybl (deceased in Tae mid-4290s) Mother: Lady Sylissa Country of Birth: Allastria Region of Birth: Oeren Lowlands Deity: Goddess Astrial Color of Eyes: Blue Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Blond/Yellow & Fair Qualities: Established Painter; Court Politics; Enchanting Singer; Loyalty to Country Flaws: Fearful of King's Power; Weighed by Sadness during the Primoerial War Elandra (pronounced as Ee-lan-dra) was also one of Taelon's best friends in their youths. With Kaleon and Zeldrik, the four of them grew up in the court of Taelon's father, King Hemelyn. After Hemelyn's death, Elandra was heavily affected and aggrieved, as he was like a father she never had. Still, she continued to support Taelon in his war to push the Primoerials back, but objected to him continuing his push to occupy Primoeria. In Tae 4306 she wedded Kaleon and gave birth to Taliesar a year later in Tae 4307. Then in Tae 4309, she leapt from the King's Tower of Caldenath to her death. Many believed it was perpetuated by the suffering she witnessed during the war that began with Hemelyn's death. |

He served Hemelyn when he was still a young boy, rising through the ranks to gradually become chamberlain of the king's court and a good friend of Zeldrik in the Council of Wizards. He was instrumental in bridging the divide Allastria faced with her neighbors - Dreuden and Thalladorn - during Taelon's reign, helping to set up an audience for him with them both. Mirlandir and Zeldrik had always been a great purveyor of books and scrolls during Hemelyn's time, but ever since a ban on spell-books came about (to dissuade wizards from leaking spells to their enemies), Mirlandir and the rest of the wizards now had to memorize them and retain their knowledge in their heads. |
Character Name: Alain (last name unknown)
Age: 16 Father: Unknown Mother: Unknown Country of Birth: Allastria Region of Birth: Oeren Lowlands Deity: Goddess Astrial Color of Eyes: Blue Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Brown/Black & Fair Qualities: Sharp Eye and Perspective; Extremely Skilled with a Bow & Arrow Flaws: Unable to Express Himself (Mute & Deaf); Easily Bullied Alain (pronounced as E(r)-lein) was one of the Allastrian Poor, driven from their homes after several reported Primoerial raids on villages and towns in Allastria. With no where else to go, Alain was carted to join King Taelon's army and trained as a bowman. Despite being mute and deaf, Alain had the sharpness (reflected through his large, blue eyes) to discern what's right and wrong without influence from others, including those who bullied him. His character was marked for his innocence in having a perspective of his own, without prejudice or manipulation from others. |

Not wanting to live under his father's shadow, Gwyknar abandoned his place as heir to his father's court to explore the world, encountering Allastrian adventurers like Kaleon and Zeldrik during their youths. Yet, despite some great adventures together, they did not part well. Dismayed, Gwyknar then returned to take his father's place in Dreuden. On behalf of King Euda and Silver Lady Eudanata of Dreuden, Gwyknar conquered many lands for them, leading the Dreuden armies and their flying Dreughari across much of Primoeria. However, he was displeased with the fact that much of this conquest only made Dreuden's neighbor - Allastria - stronger, due to their alliance. After a quarrel with King Euda about it, he left the army and pledged his allegiance only to Eudanata to become her champion and assassin. They formed a close bond - rumored to even mean a romantic but forbidden relationship. |
Character Name: Cien Warbringer (image on the right is a holding image. Replacement image currently in progress)
Age: 35 Father: Unknown Mother: Unknown Country of Birth: Armaghul Region of Birth: Zargandar Deity: God Maghul (early life) / Goddess Astrial (later life) Color of Eyes: Brown Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Bald & Tanned Qualities: Swordmastery; Hunting; Horse-riding; Bow and Arrow; Leadership; Tactical Warfare; Siege & Battle Strategy; The Spell-Casting Power (cleansing spells, mind influences) of Warrior-Priests (Harbingers) Flaws: Blind Loyalty to King, Country & God/Goddess; Arrogant; Outcast despite being Lord Commander in the Allastrian Army Cien (pronounced as Sai-e(r)n) was discovered as a ten-year-old sailor boy by an Allastrian wizard in a remote riverside inn near Thalladorn and Primoeria. The wizard made a bargain with the pirates to win him over and won. Teaching him the mastery of warrior-priesthood near the Primerian Death Cliffs, the wizard soon revealed that he was Parzil, then Archmage of Allastria under a young King Taelon. When Parzil died in Tae 4309 in the Primoerial war, he not only bequeathed Zeldrik with the Archmage title, but advised Taelon to accept Cien in his army against the Primoerials. Taelon did and gradually, Cien rose up the ranks. When he was thirty years old, Cien was commended for his bravery in battle, protecting the king in many near-death instances, and given the command as Lord Commander and leader of the Harbingers, an elite kingsguard of warrior-priests sworn to defend and protect king, country and Goddess in Allastria. Cien's loyalty to Taelon was legendary and despite not being born an Allastrian, he showed remarkable dedication to his craft and command to king and country - something that made Taelon wish that there were more Allastrians like him. |
Character Name: Morlana Ranis (image on the left is a holding image. Replacement image currently in progress)
Age: 20 Father: Lord Sandaryn Ranis of Ehrfal (disgraced in Tae 4320) Mother: Lady Wylamar of Reulandar (Dreuden) Country of Birth: Allastria Region of Birth: Oeren Lowlands Deity: Goddess Astrial Color of Eyes: Brown Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Black & Fair Qualities: Spell-Casting; Dedication to Her Craft; Loyalty to Country; Courtly Etiquette Flaws: Always Challenging Old Wisdoms; Hides her Allastrian Poor background Morlana (pronounced as Moor-la-na) used to come from a noble background. Her father, Lord Sandaryn was mayor of Ehrfal, and married the elven Lady Wylamar, 3rd daughter of Silver Lord Huendar of Reulandar in Dreuden. In essence, she was half-elven but her features followed more of her father's side. While the marriage strengthened the alliance between Allastria and Dreuden, the people of Ehrfal weren't happy. In the year Tae 4320, because of Wylamar's vanity, Sandaryn was disgraced and stripped of his titles with Morlana and her siblings. In Tae 4322, Morlana was recruited into Taelon's Allastrian Poor army and trained as a wizard. Together with her friend, Reylin, she showed remarkable insight into the magical arts. Her exemplary skill in the Three Towers' Challenge of Malhagar Keep earned the attention of Archmage Zeldrik, who then decided to take both Morlana and Reylin as his apprentices. Morlana did join Zeldrik in the building of Allastrian presence in Primoeria several times, but her chance encounters with the poor and suffering Primoerials in Primoeria made her realize what the war had really done to both countries. She began to become more intrigued by the Primoerials and what they were capable of, especially when they began to show signs that their magical capabilities were just as powerful as the Allastrians, if not better. |
Character Name: Sylan Siegeknife (image on the right is a holding image. Replacement image currently in progress)
Age: 10 Father: King Taelon Siegeknife Mother: Oressa in Caldenath City Country of Birth: Allastria Region of Birth: Oeren Lowlands Deity: Goddess Astrial Color of Eyes: Green Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Black & Fair Qualities: Mime & Stage Performance; Sketching; Strategic Thinking; Courtly Etiquette Flaws: Fearful of King's Power; Often Seen as Weak and Incapable in Public Sylan (pronounced as Sai-len) was the only heir and bastard son to King Taelon. After much persuasion from his elders, Taelon agreed to bed a whore (Oressa) from an established boudoir and conceive an heir for the future of the kingdom. It was widely known that in his youth, Taelon would often bed multiple whores but never fathered a child, until Sylan. Yet, as Taelon's absence grew with his distractions on his alliances with Dreuden and Thalladorn, and the war with the Primoerials, Sylan withdrew into an absolute wreck and recluse. Many who had seen him in public often perceived him incapable of inheriting his father's throne, let alone demonstrate the same eloquence and charisma his father had. During his free time, Sylan was often seen attending stage plays and sketching their dances and expressions. He'd been known to be intrigued by the tales of morality, honor and wisdom in those plays. When he wasn't at the plays, he would often be in the company of Lord Commander Cien, most likely to train and build his strength. He often failed to meet Cien's standards, much to the king's disappointment. After some time, Sylan began to find company from a few wizard apprentices and soldiers in Caldenath and Malhagar Keep, perhaps as a substitute for the absence of his king-father. |
Character Name: Eudanata (image on the left is a holding image. Replacement image currently in progress)
Age: Approx. 800 (elven) Father: King Euda of Dreuden, House Danata Mother: Queen Andariss (from the Kingdom of Forestine) Country of Birth: Dreuden Region of Birth: Praemos Deity: Xeptemoth (primary God among many others) Color of Eyes: Green Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Silver & Pale White Qualities: Swordmastery; Mounted Combat; Leadership; Tactical Strategy; Courtly Etiquette; Heightened Senses; Hive Mind Knowledge Flaws: Jealous; Vengeful; Blinded by Position to Prove Her Father's Wisdom Wrong Eudanata (pronounced as Yoo-da-na-ta) was the sole heir to the Dreuden kingdom, ruled by her father, King Euda. Bearing the title Silver Lady, she was constantly escorted by her elven guards, known as The Reukai, and as a gift from her father, had command over the Dreughari, an elite elven warrior sect of highly trained elven assassins. The Dreughari can toss a long-spear from a great distance and mount giant flying creatures - from the Leaf Wyverns to the sinister Phasmigons (wyvern/scorpion/stick insect cross-breeds) from Reuthorn Forest. As a race, the Dreuds believed in the Hive Mind, where all Dreuds who had ever died will have their knowledge, emotions and spiritual essence pooled into the 'Hive', to be shared to those newly born (like a recycling of life, death and rebirth - following the metamorphosis of the worm to cocoon to butterfly). Her well-trained background made her a formidable envoy and ally to Allastria, where King Euda would sometimes send her to deliver his terms to King Taelon. Eudanata was always planning ahead of the rest of her enemies, such was her skill-set, and with the power of Xeptemoth her God on her side, she believed that the Dreuds will someday conquer most of the world and become the supreme race in all of Mortalissar. |
Character Name: Black Knights of Thalladorn
Age: Average of up to 300+ (fire giants) Leader(s): Firelords of Thall (they normally ride in threes but are indiscernible one from the other) Country of Birth: Thalladorn Region of Birth: Oeren Lowlands Deity: Thall Color of Eyes: Burning fire Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Coal-red (fire giants) / Obsidian steel (black knights) Qualities: Weapons- and shield-mastery; Horse-Mounted Combat; Single-Horde Thinking; Flaming Swords; Single-Horde Mind Communication Flaws: Knights Cannot Speak (they gesture with their hands and arms); Overly Dependent on Single-Minded Herd Mentality The Black Knights of Thalladorn are the dominant race of Thalladorn, a mountainous region perpetually shrouded in mist and fire. The knights worship the God Thall, who was known to be the fiercest, if not the greatest war-monger among all of the Gods. While the Black Knights ride forth from Thalladorn to do Thall's will, their all-black armor did not protect flesh and bone. Instead, when a Black Knight was crushed, all that was left were black ichor and gasses. The real flesh and bone were fire giants, who laid dormant within the mountains of Thalladorn, as each giant's soul was connected to a Black Knight. The giants bred the black horses and forged the weapons and armor their knights rode and wore. When an army of Black Knights rode out in unison, they are in sync, as if they could speak to each other without speech, turning what would look like an army of black riders into a formidable herd of thunderous automatons. Till date, no one had really seen a fire giant up close. To do that, they'd need to breach the obsidian fortresses of Thalladorn, which were usually carved out of entire mountains and protected by foul beasts. |
Character Name: The Dreughari of Dreuden
Age: Average of up to 800+ (elven) Leader(s): Silver Lady Eudanata of House Danata Country of Birth: Dreuden Region of Birth: Praemos Deity: Xeptemoth (primary God among others) Color of Eyes: Green mostly (Dreughar) / Varies for the mounts, depending on cross-breed Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Silver and pale white (Dreughari) / Varies for the mounts, depending on cross-breed Qualities: Long-distance Spear Attack; Keen Sense of Tracking Prey; Close Bond with Mount (Leaf Wyvern or Phasmigon) Flaws: Reliant on Command from Leader; Sometimes are Overpowered by Mount; May Over-dispense on Spears in Heat of Combat The Dreughar (pronounced as Dru-gar) elves are an elite warrior class of Dreuden nobility. Trained since young to toss a long-spear up to hundreds of yards, the Dreughari must also learn to adopt a mount as his or her 'familiar mount' as part of their rites of passage. The mount may be a Leaf Wyvern, Serpent-like Dragon or a Phasmigon (a cross-breed between a wyvern, scorpion and a stick insect) found only in Reuthorn Forest of Dreuden. The Dreughari were most formidable when they swarm together and assault from the air, but they were also feared in the field, especially when their mounts had claws, jaws, tails and spikes to aid their riders in their melee. Some of the Wyverns or Dragons were known to breathe fire, frost winds or poison gasses as well. |
Character Name: The Harbingers & soldiers of Allastria / Wizards of Malhagar Keep / Wardens of the King
Age: Average of up to 100+ (humans) Leader(s): King Taelon Siegeknife Country of Birth: Allastria Region of Birth: Oeren Lowlands Deity: Goddess Astrial Color of Eyes: Varies Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Varies Qualities: United Combat Tactics in the Battlefield; Harbingers can Empower Shields & Defence; Wizards can Unleash Attacking Magic; Wizards can Fly with aid of Flight Staves Flaws: Lost when Leaderless or Scattered; Some Recruited from Allastrian Poor & May Not Be as Loyal as a True-Bred Knight or Wizard King Taelon's army consisted of his kingsguard, known as the Harbingers. These were warrior-priests who not only can fight with their swords and shields, they can also cast mild magic of protection, healing and cleansing. Besides the Harbingers, he had his calvarymen, foot-soldiers and archers, most of whom were recruited from villages and towns destroyed by Primoerial raids. Known as the Allastrian Poor, these outcasts were inducted into Taelon's army regiments and quickly assigned their roles for the many battles against the Primoerials. Then of course, Taelon had his mages, whose citadel of learning was in Malhagar Keep. The wizards listened to Archmage Zeldrik but their loyalty truly resided with the king and his lord commander Cien. When they used their flight staves to launch an aerial attack on their enemies in the sky and on the ground, the battle was almost always already won, much to the detriment of their foes. The Wardens of the King were gatekeepers of the citadels, usually working closely with the castle guards, knights and Harbingers in maintaining the peace or sowing discord should the need arose. They were most often seen herding the Allastrian Poor once they arrived in the cities, directing traffic with their whips and vulgar shouts. Many of the wardens were once Allastrian Poor themselves, but given higher statuses and greater jurisdiction in how and when training began. A few wardens were even promoted to become castle guards or knights, if they did their duties well and got noticed by the king and his commanders. |
Character Name: The Primoerials
Age: Varies depending on clan and tribe (Wolves, Bears, Hawks, Rats, Tigers, etc.) Leader(s): Tigerlord Kirath Tigarath-Hemoth Country of Birth: Primoeria (or the various clan lands within Praemos) Region of Birth: Praemos Deity: Primus the Beast God Color of Eyes: Varies depending on clan and tribe Color of Hair/Fur/Skin: Varies depending on clan and tribe Qualities: United Behind their leader, the Tigerlord; Each Clan and Tribe Has a Unique Way of Communication & Attacking/Defending Skills; Communicate with Natural Beasts Flaws: Driven mostly by Loss of Independence in their Homeland; Their Internal Tribal Strife, though Subdued due to the Tigerlord's Honor, Remains Ever Precarious The Primoerials behind Kirath's army consisted of Wolf-Fighters and -Wizards, Hawk-Fighters (who can take to the skies in an aerial attack/defence); Bear-Fighters mostly and Rat-Fighters and -Healers. The land of Praemos contained many more breeds and clans, but these were the ones Kirath wanted in his army in his war against Allastria. Most of the Primoerials spoke their universal Primoerial tongue, but internally, among the clans, and even at the tribe level, they had their own dialects, gestures and customs. Unlike their natural forest counterparts, the Primoerials were usually upright/bipedal, wore clothes/armor, had elongated fore-paws (to grasp weapons and shields) and, in the case of Wolves , Rats, Bears or Tigers, able to get down on all fours to sprint faster. Some may even speak the common human tongue. |
