Critical Role Dungeon Master and voice actor Matthew Mercer ran a special one-on-one one-hour Dungeons & Dragons adventure for talk-show host Stephen Colbert. He led Colbert, who played Capo, a half-elf bard with a pet bee named Eric, through a special quest to investigate mysterious disappearances in the Menagerie Coast in Wildemount.
The show was part of Red Nose Day 2019 donation run, where donors chose Colbert's character class, his companion, the legendary weapon to be sought and the villain that Colbert's character faced. Colbert has not really played D&D since he was a teen (he's 55 this year), but he recalled his early days including owning a signed copy of the D&D handbook by Gary Gygax.
If you've been watching Critical Role's adventures on YouTube and Twitch, then the session should not be unfamiliar to you. They've conducted many previous sessions with celebrities like Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Chris Hardwick, Patrick Rothfuss (yes, that Rothfuss of The Kingkiller Chronicles), Jon Heder and Deborah Ann Woll.
This one with Colbert though was interesting to watch not just because it's a one-one-one (so the group banter in a party adventure was missing here) but Colbert himself revealed his imaginative mind, perceptiveness and occasional jest. The way he asked questions to clarify situations and the preparedness of his character before making any risky actions showed Colbert's intuitive mind.
If you've ever played D&D or just want to watch Mercer describe situations out of thin air (or his notes) and Colbert smile with pure joy at reliving his teenage years, check it out.
